Although its not quite Scott McCloud's brilliant approach to the 'primary colors' of facial expression, here's a neat little video that describes how a wide variety of emotion is conveyed through the most basic symbols.

Wow, I don't know if this is outside of the realm of my technical expertise or not, but I have a feeling I could find some students who would do a great job at putting this together!
