If you're working on the rotoball project -or even if you're not - here's a beautiful piece of rotoscoping.

According to Scientific American, creativity is enhanced with increased interaction between the right and left brain. In a recent experiment, participants who followed a dot across a screen back and fourth from left to right (in order to increase communication between hemispheres) were more creative than those who did not.

30 Seconds to more creativity? I think I have a new 'do-now' at the beginning of each class. Follow the dot with your eyes.

Here are a couple of great stop motion videos - both very different, in style and content. These would be excellent examples of how much variety you could get out of a lesson in stop motion animation.

This first one has a great website which includes a 'making of' video.

Train of Thought from Leo Bridle on Vimeo.

This next one is also very clever- Full disclosure: I have never been choked up by anything on a lite-brite screen before.

Vimeo Pulls Ahead

So I've got accounts on both Vimeo and YouTube, and have a slight feeling of dissatisfaction to have my videos spread out over two sites. I'm not sure why this is, since organization isn't exactly one of my defining characteristics, but I like having all of my stuff in one place. However, the more I use Vimeo, the more I like it. Aside from its classier feel, it can do just about everything that YouTube can.

However, with the introduction of their Video School, Vimeo has just pulled ahead. With lessons that are both from Team Vimeo as well as crowd-sourced, there are some excellent tutorials and explanations here for your video classes. The videos are also neatly categorized by topic. Here's one from their Video 101 Basics section:

Congratulations to The Teaching Palette and Fugleflicks, two art education sites that grabbed second runner up awards in their respective categories. This is a great showing for art compared to previous years. Congrats also to the other nine art related nominees as well! Next year its Art for the Win!

Recut Trailers

Back when I started this blog almost six years ago, I came across this fantastic spoof trailer for The Shining, which I suggested would be a great lesson for talking about the power of editing. I finally used it as a project for my IB Film One class this year, and love the results!

A few of the students haven't uploaded their trailers yet, but here's the first few. If you're curious about what The Game would look like as a love story, or the horror film Amelie, have a look. You'll also see a trailer for a film about crazed obsession (Meshes of the Afternoon), Kurasawa's Horror Masterpiece, Stray Dogs, and the story of a man who takes a stand against cruelty to living-impared humans, Shaun of the Dead.

Here's a link to the playlist on youtube.

...and you can help!
I am so excited to see such a great showing of art blogs this year! I have to admit a little bit of special pride for all my friends (and family!) who have been nominated. Be sure to cast your vote for these wonderful art education blogs:

1. Best Group Blog: The Teaching Palette - Vote Here!

2. Best New Blog: New City Arts - Vote Here!

3. Best Class Blog: The Mac Lab - Vote Here!

4. Best Resource Blog: Art is Messy - Vote Here!*

5. Best Use of Video/Visual: Fugelflicks - Vote Here!

6. Best Use of a PLN: DATA Ning - Vote Here!

7. Best Educational Wiki: Matt Cauthron's The Student Creative and DATA Wikis have both been nominated. Matt has indicated that he'd prefer votes for his sites to go towards the DATA wiki (what a nice dilemma to be in though- having two sites nominated to be in competition with each other!).

8. Although not technically an art blog (or a blog at all for that matter), International Schools Island has great resources for all disciplines in Second Life, including art. Its up for Best use of a Virtual World, and anyway, ISI proprietor Chris Smith is a real swell guy. Vote here!

9. And since we're veering off the topic of art, you might want to check out my good friend Jeff's The Thinking Stick for best educational tech support blog. Vote here!

*Yes, that's my wife's blog! Congrats my dear!
