Finding pictures for use in collage or for reference, often brings up the whole copyright issue. Here is one resource of public domain images from Wikipedia. More free images are available at the darkly named (but not themed) Morguefile.
If you're looking for something a little more specific... say, Victorian, and your school will shell out a few clams, Miss Mary has all kinds of interesting Victorian Clip Art. She also has an interesting historical crafts project posted from an 1877 edition of "Beautiful Homes". Check out this Victorian Braded Rug.
