If you are teaching video or photography here are some good links about three point lighting:
MediaCollege.com has a quick explanation of three point lighting with diagrams. 3DRender.com explains 3 point lighting for virtual environments, but this very real looking virtual apple demonstrates the difference that adding a back light makes. Notice that there is more definition of the shape on the right hand side.
And finally, another good explanation with examples from Andrew Whitehurst.
